Sometimes, as a client you just want someone to come in, assess the situation, tell you what to do and help you implement the solutions. That’s what I call the consulting model.

Increasingly I find that this is not the case. More often a client will have an issue that they have been thinking about for some time. They may have formulated some ideas about how to tackle the issue, but what they really need is for someone to work with them to devise effective solutions.

Coaching is not about telling you what you should do. It’s about helping you decide, from your own resources, what you really want to achieve and how you are going to achieve it. It’s a process of facilitation rather than advice giving. The aim of the coach is simply to support the client, with skilful questioning, to develop their own solutions. And because they are their own solutions, the commitment to making them happen is so much greater. Therein lies the power of coaching.

You may detect some passion for coaching. That’s because I’ve experienced its impact. If you haven’t, give me a call.
